Wheaton Warrenville South High School

On February 4th, 2012 some members of the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation (JKB) at Wheaton Warrenville South High School went to New Hope Bible Church located in downtown Chicago.  New Hope Bible Church has a program called “Street Hope” where they take in the homeless providing a church service for them and then a ticket to go downstairs for a meal. The church usually provides food, but the JKB members decided to collect food for the meal. Papa Charlie’s also donated 30 pounds of Italian beef for the day. The JKB members cleaned the kitchen, mopped the floors and then began to prepare the food. About 50-60 people were served Italian beef, mostaccioli and fruit.  With the help of the Athletic Leadership Council at WWSHS, JKB members brought 15 bags of warm clothes to also donate.

Athletic Leadership Council (ALC)/J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation (JKB)

Wheaton Warrenville South High School's Athletic Leadership Council and J. Kyle Braid members held a diaper drive last week for the InterFaith Food Pantry.  The athletes on the ALC and JKB asked teammates and coaches to collect diapers for families.   They collected over 6,000 diapers and delivered them to the pantry to help those in need.

Wheaton Warrenville South High School - Food Drive

September 28, 2011

One of our local food pantries was in desperate need of canned fruits and vegetables.  So, the JKB kids organized a quick one week food drive for the People's Resource Center (PRC). They took 400 cans to the food pantry on Monday.  The PRC had e-mailed to let them know that they were completely out of fruits and vegetables and would have had to purchase them for the week.  They were very thankful for the help. "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

WWSHS - Athletic Council/J. Kyle Braid Cereal Drive/Clean-up Day

FRIDAY, OCTOBER  22, 2010

During the week of September 27th through October 1st, the Athletic Leadership Council and the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation held a cereal drive for the People's Resource Center (PRC). These 50 leaders took initiative by talking to their friends, teammates, neighbors and peers about donating cereal for this excellent cause. In total, the ALC and JKB students collected over 600 boxes of cereal, which was delivered to the PRC on Monday, October 4th. Thank you to the Tiger Community for your generosity!

WWSHS - JKB and Athletic Leadership Council Presents at Middle Schools

FRIDAY, MAY 7, 2010

On May 4, 2010 and May 5, 2010 Wheaton Warrenville South's J. Kyle Braid Leadership Group (JKB) and Athletic Leadership Council (ALC), arrived at Edison Middle School and Hubble Middle School.

We first showed an informative PowerPoint about what ALC and JKB has accomplished and how the 8th graders could get involved with sports at South. We then broke up into 4 smaller groups, named after our school seal, Integrity, Tradition, Scholarship and Commitment, to teach the kids what high school is really like.

From Tradition they watched a PowerPoint and learned about the great institution we have at South with athletics and academics. In Integrity the kids were taught how to behave on and off the field and the importance of making good choices.

They learned that high school could be a fresh start. The kids learned how to manage school with everything else they could do as a WWS tiger in Scholarship, where they stressed the importance of how school comes first. Commitment taught them how at South we have great pride and dedication to everything we do, whether it is a sport, club or class. They discovered that it is essential to commit to your team and yourself in and out of season.

Tom the Tiger came and answered the 8th grader's multitude of questions, ranging from how to try out for sports to how to start a club. They were enticed to ask and answer questions by getting a South t-shirt in return, so they too can show South pride at the games and events they will attend next year.  Hopefully they will look up to the right role models given to them in the Athletic Leadership Council and the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Group and all around Wheaton Warrenville South. We stressed the importance of getting involved at the school, so they will take a good attitude with them as they go into a new year at South!

WWS JKB: HELP HAITI

HELP HAITI

FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2010

The JKB students have started "Help Haiti", a fundraiser during lunch to collect money for the recent tragedy stricken country of Haiti. We'll be collecting during all lunch periods this upcoming week (January 25-29). Any spare change would be greatly appreciated. Also, there is the option of texting "Haiti" to 90999. A $10 donation will be charged to your cell phone bill. This, as well as the collections during lunch, will go towards the Red Cross.

After one week of collection, a total of $1348.13 was raised and donated to the Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund.

WWS JKB: READING AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

READING AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2009

The last of the schools have been read to. The 40 ALC / JKB members have been visiting local elementary schools (Wiesbrook, Johnson, Lincoln, Madison and Bower). Students cuddled up as classical favorites were read to them by their favorite high school athletes. ALC and JKB members have been receiving thank you cards asking for them to come again.

WWS JKB: HELPING WITH THE ALC

HELPING WITH THE ALC
MONDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2009

Arriving back from the Ranch, the students learned many valuable skills in which they could spread among their teammates. This began by teaching these valuable skills to the ALC. The Athletic Leadership Council is comprised of two athletes from every sport in the school that possess leadership skills. Zoe Smith, Nattali Shelton, Sparty Chino, and Collin Fedor are teaching the four Life Skills (Refusal, Negotiation, Helping, and Self-Helping) to the members, the same way they learned them at the Ranch.

With role play and discussion, these skills are learned and passed on to the ALC members, and then passed on to their teammates.

In addition to learning, the ALC is assisting JKB with many volunteering opportunities. Members have been reading to students in local elementary schools. Also, clean up around the school has been done in addition to a DVD drive for Kohl's House.

This is just the beginning of the many activities and opportunities  JKB and the ALC are bringing to WWSHS.

DVD Drive

Teamed up with the Athletic Leadership Council athletes, we've helped collect over 300 DVD's for the Kohl's House at Children's Memorial Hospital. Kohl's House is a state-of-the-art facility located just steps away from Children's Memorial, offering transplant patients and their families a convenient, comfortable place to stay that's close to their transplant team and follow-up care.

These DVD's were perfect for the children who have stayed there a while and have gotten bored of the same old movies. With this generous donation, the patients can relieve the boredom of recovering while watching their new copy of National Treasure.
