Downers Grove South 2009 Recipients of the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Award

Downers Grove South is proud to announce the 2009 recipients of the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Award. The 2009 recipients are John Junk, Chelsea Lavin, Mike Monaghan, Amy Nagle, and Meredith Richard. A panel of J. Kyle Braid alumni, teachers/coaches,and administrators selected these individuals from a pool of sixteen finalists. To be eligible, students must; be a sophomore, possess a 2.5 GPA, be involved in extracurricular and community activities, and be perceived as a positive leader and mentor by his/her peers.

John Junk is a two-year member of the South High football team and a member of the volleyball team his freshman year. John’s leadership roles at South High include sophomore representative of the speech team, novice of the year in speech, and tenor section leader of choir. He has served the community by volunteering time to P.A.D.S., a homeless charitable organization.

Chelsea Lavin participates in tennis and softball. Chelsea was selected Most Improved Player by the tennis staff at the conclusion of her freshman season (sophomore team) and sophomore season (varsity team). As a freshman, she was selected to play on the junior varsity softball team. Her leadership ability is noted in the Physical Education Department as she serves as a P.E. Leader.

Mike Monaghan participated in football and wrestling during his first two years at South High. Mike was a team captain for this year's sophomore team that posted a perfect 9-0 season. In addition to athletics, Mike is an active member of A.C.E. (Athletes Committed to Excellence) and Relay for Life. Mike has demonstrated a volunteer spirit by donating time for numerous events sponsored by the Darien Lions Club.

Amy Nagle is a member of the soccer team. Amy is heavily involved at South High with such groups as Peer Leader, Math Tutor, P.E. Leader, Snowball, and A.C.E. (Athletes Committed to Excellence). This winter, her commitment to A.C.E. included serving on the spirit committee. Outside of school, she is an alter server for her church and volunteers at Carefree Village in Darien.

Meredith Richard is a two-year member of the golf and badminton teams. Meredith is a member of A.C.E. (Athletes Committed to Excellence) and a P.E. Leader. Freshman Class Board, Mad Dash, Snowball, and D.A.R.E. are additional activities that Meredith has been involved with at South High. This year, she was selected to the Illinois Music Educators Association All-District Choir.

The selected individuals will attend the J. Kyle Braid Ranch for one week this summer. The program at the Colorado facility is presented in three integral parts; leadership training, ROPES challenge course, and productive leisure activities. The ranch experience is the beginning of a two-year commitment. Upon their return home, these individuals are expected to make a difference in their school and community through effectively using their leadership skills.
