Carli Schieferdecker and Zak Swanson, two sophomores at Cambridge HighSchool, have been selected as recipients of the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Award. They are the children of Brian and Tina Schieferdecker and Alan and Cindy Swanson. They were nominated by teachers and JKB alumni based on grade point average, athletics and extra curricular involvement, as well as leadership qualities among peers.

Alternates were also selected. They are Alyssa Wilson, Kourtnie Janson, Tim Johnston and Tyler Horberg. They are the children of Dan and Misty Wilson, Scott and Katie Janson, Rick and Kim Johnston and Bryan and Tammy Horberg.

Last years recipients were Heather Hull and Rylee VanMelkebeke. Meredith Carr and Chad Borkgren was the previous year's recipients. Other activity participants are Amy Herges, Kyle Morey, Kevin Lenertz, Jenny Clark, Amelia Janson, Shane Lindburg and Ethan VanNorman.

The J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation was created in 1994 by Ken and Colleen Braid in memory of their only child, Kyle Braid. Its mission is to identify and select young adults who exhibit leadership, have a strong sense of moral value and possess the compassion necessary to make a difference among their peers and in their community.

The recipients will attend a one-week program at the Leadership Training Ranch in Villa Grove, Colo.,in July and August. While there, they will attend classes to learn how to talk to others about peer pressure and other issues facing teens today. There are a lot of other activities planned at the ranch including horseback riding, white water rafting, a ropes course and fishing.

Swanson will attend the camp from Saturday, July 29 through Saturday,Aug. 5. Schieferdecker will attend the camp from Saturday, Aug. 5, through Saturday, Aug. 12. When Swanson and Schieferdecker return from the camp they will share leadership skills they learn while in Colorado with the alternates of the group.

This is the third year in a row that we have selected alternates to stay active in the program, noted Lisa Miller, Cambridge High School sponsor. This allows the program to be more visible and the students more accountable for their actions.  Participants will have different fundraisers in the upcoming months. Proceeds from the fundraisers help send the students to the leadership camp.
